I've been happy with Photoshop 7, but I noticed there is a 30-day demo of CS, so I tried it. I've got a g5 2ghz, ati 128mb 9800, 4gb ram and 2 250gb drives (one is a dedicated scratch disk).

The first really annoying thing I noticed about CS is there are very noticable pauses when a large document goes blank (gray checkerboard) to update. Sometimes just switching tools causes a redraw.

I've got 90% ram allocated (though PS only sees 2gb of my 4). So "90%" is really less than 50%. It will still do this with no other apps running.

This is a complete deal breaker. If there is no solution to these annoying redraws, I certainly won't be moving to CS.

Anyone else with plenty of horsepower having petty redraw problems with CS? Anyone found a solution?

I've got 29 days left on the trial.

I havn't noticed it on my 1ghz eMac with 640mb of ram and a 60 gb hard drive. (not a very fast computer compaired to a g5) Seems to run fine for me. The only delay like that I have noticed was when applying a filter to a massive image. Never had it do that because of switching a tool.

Just the other day I was working onn a 27.5mb photoshop file that is 11 x 17 at 300 ppi and has 41 layers. The only time i noticed a redraw like that was when i made 8 layers visable. it cause all the layers to disappear for a second and redraw.

It dosen't really bother me... but that might be because I am used to useing slow computers at school.

Check at the Adobe Forums. They're pretty active, and people are generally helpful and freindly, so long as you don't go posting thead titles like "OMG Photoshop is teh SUXX0RZ!! F/U ADOBE!!11!!" (for example) Belive it or not, people do.
