I've long heard that CRTs are the best for doing color correction work but some articles I've read recently have said that current LCDs have caught up with CRT displays and you can do reliable color work on them.
Can anyone here confirm or deny the color capabilities of LCD monitors?
My company wants me to look into the subject so we can plan on the purchase of new monitors for our Color department. We're a prepress house and want to get going on a color workflow that syncs our monitors, proofs, and client presses.
Thanks in advance.

Iam a graphic designer who has used (and still do) a G4 with a Formac 21"CRT for the past couple of years. All colour correction work has proved to be accurate ie the final printed jobs have been pretty much like the jobs viewed on screen - no nasty surprises !
I recently purchased a new G5 along with a LaCie 20" lcd monitor plus a LaCie 18" for palettes. The monitors look great but I struggled with colour integrity. The lcds seem to have much more colour saturation which I could not reduce. I even bought one of those 'spyders' that hang over the screen and do the colour adjustment. This was not successful.
The main problem I found was that the shadows appeared very dense and I would colour correct to bring out detail. The proofed (Cromalin) jobs just didn't match the job viewed on the lcd monitor - they were a bit washed out. When the same file was viewed on my old G4 with a Formac CRT the shadows were too light. I have since bought a LaCie 22" CRT and I find this more accurate. It's a shame because I love the flat screens on my desk.
I also have a G5 at home with a NEC/Mitsubishi 20" flat screen. It's a fantastic looking monitor in silver just like the G5. I think this is slightly better than the LaCie. I haven't tried to do much adjustment on this monitor so I can't be sure what it's capable of.
My local repro house house has got new gear included monitors and they have gone for the CRTs. If someone can tell me how to get accurate colour on the LCDs I would be one happy bunny.

i would like to know about the apple displays. i think i will always use an lcd at home, but when it comes to work unless it gets better crt is the most acurate. p.s. this is my experience with very few lcd displays. i am getting my apple display soon so i'll be able to see if its improved on that one.
