I'm looking at purchasing an Epson R800, but I'm confused about needing a RIP because it does not support PostScript. We'll mostly be using it to print Photos and some DVD labels, but we use Quark to do the labels, will it print all crappy without a RIP? Anyone havbe other printer options that can print to on a DVD and has PostScript? Thanks.

I had something similar happen with a printer of mine before I got it properly installed in OSX. (which I’m not sure is your problem)

Possible temporary workaround:
I made PDFs of the files they printed fine

I realize that’s not the best answer, but for me it helped me keep my stuff moving until I got the problem figured out.

Good Luck!
Rosie

edit: oops, just re-read the post You don't have the problem yet, you are asking about the rip. My bad.

First off - the days of needing a RIP [software or hardware] in a small company are kind of behind us, not that I recommend using network queuing for printing to a central output device but it does work in the short term. Providing you have less than five people trying to go to it. OSX handles the postscipt internally better than many RIPs I have used.

It is a good workflow to create PDFs to print anyway, it streamlines the file, so if you do have 5 people networked to one printer - with only the first comes first printed network queue - it will simply print faster.

That being said - If you are going to film you have to use a RIP. Unless I have missed something in the past couple of years.

I did a quick read on this Epson R800 ... I don't think you will have any trouble printing postscript to it. In my home I have a Canon i960 and it does not like Quark postscipt much at all [rastered nasties on output] but if I create the PDF first the output is beautiful!

go figure - The printer looks fantastic in Spec. enjoy the new toy!
