im not sure if you guys know how to do those magical metallic colors (5th color)? Spot color i believe, im designing a business card and would like to have a blue metallic background as my color... not sure if you can do this in PS or would illustrator be better for it? Does anyone know how to properly set this up so that it will print right when i send it to print? What kind of printers are able to do metallic inks? Please help... i'm not sure how this work... i know theres a swatch called pantone metallics... but i'd appreciate it if someone can go over in detail on how to properly do this.

I heard someone told me that for every area you have a metallic color, you have to duplicate and put a white area underneath it, is this true?

Metallic inks are the same as regular inks – you simply designate where you would like them to be. You can use them with vector graphis and with halftones so, whether in Illustrator or PShop, they can be applied.

If your design(s) usees vector graphics just assign the metallic(s) you want used to the art. If you're working with pixel-based imagery you need to do more work in PShop. That's beyond the scope of this post.

If possible I suggest getting your hands on some samples of what metallics look like when printed on matte vs. covered stock. The more samples the better. Appearance of these inks can vary greatly depending on the paper.

have the cards printed by a printer that you can go and talk to...a good sales rep will be able to go through various papers and inks with you and should have some idea of what will and will not work. Ask how they prefer you designate spot colors, metallic inks, etc...
