I suggest ANYONE entering this contest pay close attention to this line from the contest rules:

" B. All entries will become property of Macs N Pods / Idle Geeks. "

Loosely translated: We get sole ownership of your intellectual property in exchange for the "chance to win" an iPod Shuffle.

My two problems with contests like this are:

1. WHY should anyone hand over right to their ideas / designs for such a paltry opportunity?

2. When a company puts out a contest with the specific verbage "A CHANCE TO WIN" they legally do not need to award a prize. That, in my mind, is next to theft.

A few years back I worked on a project where the client was giving away a substantial sum of money -- think two commas in the numeric notation of the amount. The marketing director, in cooperation with the legal team, was keen to include " A CHANCE TO WIN $XXX,XXX,XXX". Their entire angle was, "We'll never have to pay out but we'll get lots of interest and plenty of free press for our huge cash prize." They were right and naive consumers gladly handed over their personal information in exchange for nada. That, in my mind, should be illegal.

I have a GREAT design I've been sitting on.... no way I'm entering to win a freaking "1 GB iPod"... or even a CHANCE to win one.

nhere:

Especially from a poster who comes here and does this with his/her first post.
Sounds like, "Hey, anyone want to design something for us for FREE"....

Ugh...

We are going to give the winner the prize - we're not scammers out to get your designs.. We just like running websites and like having people read them, and like running kickass competitions like this. We don't want exclusive rights to the design, just the ability to use it on our site as we please (We are going to make a gallery or something of all the designs, and state our opinions of each one individually).

Again, we're not scammers, and we are giving away the prize.

Edit: I've changed the legal wording to better satisfy you folks: "Macs N Pods / Idle Geeks will possess unlimited usage rights to all submitted designs, but designs are still property of their original creators."

This just says that we can use the images on our site as we wish, but the designs and images are still property of the people who created them.

WTF are you posting a contest on another forum, and then demanding people post in yours for "15 quality posts"?

I won't enter your contest, but I will give my opinion, even if it is not ok with you.
Run your little contest for the "iPod Shuffle prize" It's not worth *my* time to both design a new iPod and post on your forum.

hah ha hah ha ha. funny funny funny.

I seriously doubt that the iPod will become a phone, telepathic, or lose the click wheel anytime soon. I also doubt it will switch from iTunes to Rhapsody in the near future

If you want rights to display on the site, thats what you should reserve. Not "become property." That insuates all rights.

This almost makes me want to design an iPod just so that I can not enter it in this contest!

"In a world without walls or fences, what need have we for windows or gates?"

This is why we changed the legal wording.

Actually, many design contents require that you relinquish your rights when you submit art... it's not uncommon.
