Anyone know how to step an illustrator CS file down to 10 without bugging the clients to resend it to you as a 10 version?

Other tools?

I actually found a partial solution ... I opened the ai file in Preview and saved it as a PDF and then opened it in Illustrator. It worked for this simple file I needed which was basically a CAD floor plan for an event.

I don't think this would work successfully with complex blends etc...

You can choose "export" from the File menu and then save as an earlier Illustrator format. You can choose from versions 7, 8, 9 and 10.

One other thing to note – saving in an earlier Illustrator format often screws up text. Make sure you turn text to outlines, or don't use optical kerning.

CS uses a new type engine that's not compatible with earlier versions. When you export backward you'll get type that's broken up into individual text blocks. It's possible to copy the text in its entirety then paste into a new text box – that will give you the ability to edit it again. This is particularly irritating if your type is on a path.

Bottom line :: Don't export backward if you need to edit type – it's too time consuming.

Yep ... I can see the type negatives. It opens like a PDF document where the type is segmented.

Ahhh .... Adobe what are you thinking. Or are you!?

Thanks for the info guys.
