Hi all. I have a bit of a poser that I thought I'd throw at you...
I have a customer who does high-end wedding photography. I mean, it's really nice stuff. What they want to do is give the wedding party a perfect-bound 9x12 book containing about 100 photos. A few different cropped sizes with a band of color relating to the wedding.
Some may portrait, some landscape, some cropped.
We have the means to print the books for them- the print quantity would range from 1 to 5. So based on the short run, the dilemma comes in the setup.
They have InDesign, but are really not layout savvy and it would be quite time-consuming for them. They have a price from another designer for $250 a book- which I think is quite reasonable. However- when you think of producing just one book, the setup, plus the printing and binding cost would be $400-$500 or so.
They are looking at a way to automate the process. Perhaps some kind of plug-in for InDesign or something like that.
If you look at http://www.sansuisoftware.com/Products/XPubpro.shtml, it would be ideal, but as far as I can tell, it is not available on a small-scale.
Does anyone have any other ideas?

If they don't mind the limited layout options, they could do an iPhoto book.

You could create templates (like as in PowerPoint) for them to layout images. Show them how to apply master pages and styles, and resize and crop, etc. It would be money for you and it would send them on their way. You could also get the templates made (one time cost), and charge to lay them out (by you or a designer, recurring cost). Having templates made for samples for clients would be nice, then you can guage time for customization, which I would think all wedding parties would want.
I think some kind of Automator/XML solution would just be overkill.
US$.02 Non-refundable.
