I discovered this tip from looking at how others were taking their pictures.
Sure made a difference in the output. Tilt the camera to the portrait position
instead of the landscape position. I use the free Calico panorama software
but for $30 the water marks can be removed after registration.

If you have photoshop cs2 with bridge installed you can stitch them for free. Open the photos to be stiched in bridge, select them then go to edit > Photoshop Commands > Stitch... and it will launch the stitcher application.
if you own a canon ixus digicam, they actually have inbuilt photo stitch function with guides so you align your viewfinder with previous photo that have been taken
