i have recently moved from a pc novice video editor up to apples final cut pro. i've done heaps with it and have become farmiliar with the essentials. one thing i find frustrating is log and capture.

for my less important projects i'd rather just let the computer capture the whole tape and cut up the scenes itslef, like imovie does. can fcp do this?

FCP has some scene detection.. read the included help files (you find on your installer disk a >1400 pgs manual, answering most of your questions....)

use batch capture you set timecode points and it will fast forword and rewind if necessary to only capture the scenes you want
heres a site with a few free tutorials http://www.vtc.com/products/finalcutpro5.htm

scroll down and they are on the left under the video capture heading

Yes it can, after a fashion:

1. Capture in your tape.

2. Highlight the clip and select Mark > DV Start/Stop Detect

3. The clip should now have a disclosure triangle next to it (like a folder). Open this and there are markers for each start/stop point. These can be renamed and used just like regular subclips.

This assumes that the clip has retained the correct info in the stream - if you have transcoded from another source, the start/stop detection will not work.
