I'm on the fence... the Nikon D50 is starting to show its age... I'm wondering if it is still worth getting or waiting.

I keep going back and forth... Nikon/Canon... everything from $650 to $2000... ugh.

My logic is I'll start off with a cheap camera and work my way up... but I'll buy nice lenses.

It's so cheap now that I don't see a reason to worry. I'm in a similar situation but I'm not to bothered, I just bought a new D70s and if they replace it in a few weeks? **** happens, I'll sell it and buy the new model if it offers enough of an upgrade.

Just know that whatever body you buy isn't as important as the glass you put on it. If you get good glass, as you upgrade the body and grow into them you'll get more out of the lenses and push them harder.

The fact is no matter what you buy and when you buy it there will be a new model coming out. After running the same debate in my head for months I finally bit the bullet and bought the D70 last year. My only regret was not buying it sooner.

I accept that there will always be another upgrade around the corner, but I'm just on the fence regarding the D50. I'm also not a fan of buying at the end of a life cycle... but it's not a computer... so it's a little different.

Ugh... I hate purchasing stuff.

Nikon D50 should be in place for another 2 years....it's Nikon we are talking about.

At around $500, id buy it simply because a slightly better camera a couple months from now is nothing compared to the photos youll make in that time

Nikon's life cycles for SLRs are LONG. The D50 is still at the beginning of its cycle. The D70/D70s, on the other hand, is ripe for replacement.

What do you think would be a nice higher end lens for this camera? I hear the kit lens isn't all that good.

the kit lens is not that good.

if you need wide angle, the 18-70mm D70 kit lens is probably the best kit lens there is, other than the 14-54mm that comes with the E-1. it's a little slow though (max aperture=F/3.5), so if you have the money to spend, the Nikkor 17-55 F/2.8 is hard to beat.

Isn't that lens around $1300?

$500 for the camera... $1300 for the lens

I have a D70s with the (kit) 18-70 lens; I think it sells for about $300. I've been very happy with it and use it as a "walkign around" lens. If I had the money, I'd buy the new 18-200 VR lens that is the kit lens for the D200. I think it's about $700--if you can find it.

I bought the D70s package with the kit lense and a 55-200MM zoom lense. It was around $1,300 total. We've been very please with it. Both the lenses have worked great. I'd like to get a faster zoom lense, but honestly we need another camera more than we need upgraded lenses. We are considering a D200 for our next one, unless we can find a great deal on another D70s.
