Hey guys,

I was hoping someone could help me out. I have been working on this illustrator file and now it suddenly won't let me open it. I think it may have gotten corrupted...

When i try to open it i get the error message "Can't open the illustration. Could not complete the requested operation." I am running CS 2 on a PC with XP home and 512 m ram

If i try open the file in photoshop, acrobat or illustrator CS1 it opens but it crops all the work to the artboard. SOME of the linework outside of this still exists but it is very basic, a majority of it is missing. I tried renaming it to a pdf but it still does the same thing. Also when I open it in CS1 it gives me the message "An unknown shading type was encountered."

PLEASE does anyone know how I might be able to recover anything outside of the artboard??? Otherwise 1 month of work is gone..

If anyone is keen to look at the actual file you can email me at dustyjn@gmail.com

And yes I have now learned the importance of saving multiple copies and backing up regularly.

is it a .ai file or a .pdf file? ive noticed when jumping around from version to version that .pdf's usually end up being the worst option to save as, if its being cropped like you said...it usually means thats all thats left from the artwork unless theres a mask you're unaware of.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

Yeah it's a .ai file Up until the point where it stopped working it was only being opened in CS2. I only made it a pdf after I couldn't open it normally. It seems strange about the cropped part as there is still artwork outside this area but it doesn't have any detail.

yeah...this has happened a few times to me. best advice is to make backups of your work whenever you save. i save all my current work on my shuffle and 40gb ipod, and powerbook. then when i go home i load it up on my imac, its a bit overkill but atleast i have access to my work wherever i go.
