i'm new to this, but i want to make a documentary. i use the latest version of the ibook, so my guess is that running final cut would be too taxing on the computer. will imovie be sufficient? also, i only have 15gb free space on my hard drive. when i transfer video from a camera to the computer, it is always a very large file - do i have to buy an external hard drive? does anyone have any tips for me? thanks!

imovie should be adequate, depending on what your subject is. most documentaries don't require much fancy post work.
how much raw footage are you planning on having? because 15GB is very very little in the world of DV.

well i was just talking about 15gb from a little footage i put on my computer from a family vacation. the actually documentary i want to make will probably be about an hour long, in addition to a ton of scrap footage. right now i have an ibook with only 15gb free and no superdrive. would my best move be to buy an imac? i'd have to sell my ibook, even though i enjoy having a laptop. would it be better to buy a dvd burner and external hard drive? whether i should buy an imac or an external hard drive, about how much hard drive space would i need? say, a minimum. thanks for your help.

1h miniDV video tape = ~13GB
with a ratio of 1:4 (you record 4h and edit a final project down to 1h) you need... hm... 52GB just for the video footage...
you Mac's system needs some (5GB) free disk space, iDVD demands 10 - 15 GB free disk space on start-up drive to work.
ext. burner are just supported from iDVD5 or 6...
ext harddrives have to be firewire connected and formatted to "MacOsExtended" to work properly with iMovie...
if you can afford it, upgrade to an iMac; get 1 GB RAM (just to make it really smooth); the "smaller" 160GB internal drive fits most needs; get for backup/as mass storage an ext. harddrive (as said: firewire connected, you can buy "any" PC brand, use Disk Utility to format correctly before usage)

yeah....
from experience making movies takes a space.....
i can tell u tht i made a movie, with 1 song and 40 picts, or less........ 1.1 GB, few transitions (i was a n00b back then)
imagining 1 pict = 1 Mb, and the song no more than 5 Mb..... it should in theory take about 45 Mb on the disk..... NOPE- oveer a gig (dunno how)
however, follow k_munic 's instructions- they sound adapt.......make sure u dont go broke after tht though
