I am working on an update/new edition of an engineering book. (LOTS of 10 column, 45 line tabbed tables of figures... woo hoo)

The client just sent me two .ps files that they wonder if I can use (of course I can... I can just pass them on to the printer) but then they said, Can you open them and make some corrections...
Can I?

When I just double-clicked one of them, it announced "Converting PostScript file to PDF" and them opened it in Preview...

I have Photoshop CS & Illustrator CS. Can I work with these files? What should I use to open them? (I could experiment to see, but I am hoping some experienced fellow art director has dealt with this problem before...

FYI, under the "Kind" column in my window it says NSPostScriptPboardType

If you're comfortable with the Postscript language, you can edit the file in a text editor (like BBEdit), but I wouldn't recommend it.

If you're interested in processing the file for output, there are some great utilities:
PSUtils - PostScript utilities

(Edit: I should have mentioned that you'll need to use X11 to run the utils.)
I do not like those green links and spam.
I do not like them, Sam I am.

I'm not up to X11 yet... and I am much more a designer than a PostScript Code guy... I'm sure I can give the file to the printer when it needs to be output... the trick is if I have to make changes...

thanks anyway

well... Illustrator CS opened it ok, but substituted default fonts... I think this is do-able...

You can "steal" vector images in Flash by ctrl clicking a flash animation (if they didn't turn it off with code) and print a .ps file and open that in Illustrator.

I've often taken logos that way for work and for fun.

bestest method but it will take some work to filter the fonts used, unless they could supply you with the fonts they used. Engineering company, I suspect they used a bunch of PC TrueType... Convert to PDF in Acrobat Distiller, (don't let the OS do it you won't like the results). Make sure it does not subset the fonts, open in A7 and edit, but save often, this method is pretty hack and slash so take your time,

Save it as a PDF and then edit it in Illustrator.

You should be able to open and modify (to some extent) the file directly in Illustrator, without passing via PDF. However you will need the document's fonts if there are any and most text will be broken into chunks.

Alternatively, you could distill to PDF then edit it in Acrobat Pro to avoid broken text/font issues, assuming the fonts were embedded in the PS file to start with. Then you can forward on the edited PDF to the printer.

I should add that it is not at all normal for anyone to be supplied PS files as artwork, PDF fine, EPS fine, native files fine. But not PS. PS files are device dependent and should only be used internally for distilling or printing.
