I just got the approval from my wife to upgrade our SLR cameras. She is coming off of a film based Minolta and I have a Canon Digital Rebel (EOS 5.1 MP). We will be selling both (and all of her lenses) and getting a better digital SLR. I'm looking for a step up from the Digital Rebel.

I want to keep all of my Canon lenses, and I'd like something with a few more features. My wife loves macro photography, and I would like to take more astronomy photos.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

well the newer rebels are a big improvement over the original digital rebel. the 400D (XTi) just came out. the improved autofocus and dust removal system are big upgrades in my book.

but if you're looking to spend a bit more money, the 40D is supposedly coming out in the coming months.

if you want to go crazy, wait for the successor to the 5D. well, if your lenses aren't EF-S, that is.

go out to a camera shop and play with some new canons. I prefer my d60 and 20d over the rebel series because of the build quality and the control wheels. But if you are already used to the digital rebel, the new 10 megpixel 400D does look pretty sweet. If you want to get really fancy, there is a version of the 20d made for astrophotography.

as far as selling all your equipment goes, used film cameras don't go for much unless they are rare or professional cameras. Same goes for old digital cameras. Don't count on too much of a subsidy for your new purchase. And it is great to have a back-up camera.

Yes, I'm really torn between the 30D and the 400D (XTi). Why would Canon introduce better specs on the 400D (XTi) first? At almost twice the price, the 30D has lower resolution, no sensor cleaning, etc. That better be a really good body on the 30D and much better manual controls for that price.

Anyone know when the 40D will come out?

I ended up purchasing a Canon 30D. Wow, what a nice camera. Not all of the features of the XTi, but certainly what I needed.

As a bonus, it fits my hands better.

I'm not sure how high or low end DSLR you're looking for, but when I was looking, I compared the Rebel XT and the Nikon D50 and D70. Personal opinion, but the Rebel XT feels a lot cheaper in hand than either of the Nikons. That said, if you're looking for a battery grip, the D70 has one and the D50 does not. Oh how I wish there was one made for the D50. Anyway, don't discount the Nikon cams. Especially if you're looking at the Rebel XT.
