Hi all,

I have been on the search for a special kind of printer. I am trying to make custom printed vinyl decals at my store. I know all about the fancy roland and other brand eco-solvent etc printers. They are way to big and don't really do what I need. I have been looking at the ALPS printers, because they can print on anything, but of course those are now discontinued.

Then I came across one little hint on some website that a proofing printer might do what I need it to. I need something that runs off of a dry ink/resin printing technology, and can print straight onto the vinyl. It doesnt' have to be big - 12" max would be okay.

I was on the kodak website, and they have something called "halftone" proofing that they say can do metallics, and print on almost any media. That sounds an awful lot like an ALPS printer - but I can't seem to find any information on how it actually works.

And dupont has a waterproof thermal one - is that kind of like the thermal vinyl printers I have been looking at, but smaller format?

Can you guys provide any insight.

I believe you are talking about a Kodak Approval. In my experience, it will not do what you are looking for. Unfortunately, I do not know what will. Sorry.

Unfortunately I'm not sure such a machine exists. The Roland SolJets (we have two) are designed to do 'small run' sticker jobs (as well as large format work) where the total number required is anything from one to a couple of hundred units.

If you only produce these from time to time there is no way that purchasing a machine would be the most economical option for you, your best bet is probably to sub-contract the work out when you get it. As usual it all comes down to return on investment and your production volume.

If you do need any advice on SolJets I can help you out as I know them extremely well.

I believe KeriVit is correct, you're talking about Kodak approvals. Those are BIG MONEY. Certainly not what you want to do large runs of decals on. At least not if you're looking to turn a profit.
