Forgive me, my video terminology is bare minimum so hopefully I get my question across accurately......

I have an .avi file that seems to have a broken index, meaning that even though the video plays much longer, the progress bar of any video player (vlc, mplayer, quicktime are the ones i've tried) stops at around 12 minutes. Because of this I can't search forward past the 12 minute mark. Is there some way to rebuild the 'index' for this file?

I tried importing the file into iMovie but there must be some codec problem with that cuz it just created a video clip without any video or audio, just a black screen.

Open it in VLC. It will ask you if you want it to attempt to fix the AVI index.

Curiously, when i now open the file in VLC it now gives me this error:

'access_file: read failed (Input/output error)'

It didn't do that yesterday, very weird.
