I have the c3180 printer that came with my mbp but it is a piece of crap and is really expensive to keep up with on ink. I print 8x10 photos often but not everyday so I'm looking for a printer that would be good for quality and not run a high ink cost. also if it has a scanner built in thats nice too.
Any suggestions are welcomed!

For stand-alone inkjets, I like the Canon Pixma iP4200/5200; for all-in-ones the Canon Pixma MP450/800.
Printing an 8x10 on a color inkjet costs from $0.90 to $1.40. I'd also think about going to Costco ($1.48 per 8x10 or 8x12) or Walmart ($1.96 per 8x10), especially if you're making more than one print at a time. You can upload the photos online and pick them up in-store an hour later. The prints they make look better and last longer than any inkjet prints I've seen (even when people use the expensive paper).

Although the prints may last longer & your $/pic seems about right, what about the time & gas costs to go to wallyworld/costco & back..... let alone the frustrations of fighting the traffic & crowds, standing in line, and fighting to get a refund if they dont come out the way you wanted (which means even more frustration & line standing)
To me these things have to be figured in too, just more reasons to avoid going anywhere near wallyworld/costco etc

Of course, it doesn't make sense to drive to Costco just to pick up one print if you need it that very day. But I was thinking for things like framing and gifts and archival, where you can pick them up at your next trip to Costco (which I seem to make about once a week).
