Just came across this term used by a client in regards to printing a 3 panel roll fold flyer, "machine sealed". Does anyone know if this refers to a varnish or a cello-glaze, or something else. my google search gave me the impression it is usually applied to envelopes which is not true in this case, cheers and thanks

quick edit (though its a long shot): but if anyone knows the japanese terms for cello or varnish it would be very helpful......!

"Machine sealed" most likely refers to mechanically applying a paper or plastic wafer seal or glue strip to seal a brochure closed. It also can apply to inserting and sealing into a polybag, envelope or carton. This is usually done in direct response programs. Postal systems usually require most kinds of mailings be sealed or contained in some manner.

In my experience, 'machine-sealed' means applying a varnish to the print after printing. It's a low-cost alternative to laminating or UV varnish.

westbo I too considered they were talking about a kind of film packaging for mailing purposes, but they specifically refer to "2-sided machine sealed" so I think maybe it is a varnish as glypht said. I guess I will find out soon enough.

I'm thinking it means a 2-side aqueous coating. A varnish.
I'll go ask some pre-press guys and see if they know fer-sure...
