Is font sharing illegal if using it for school?

I'm just wondering because I need a font for my Graduate course and I can't pay the $100 it costs. Can someone share with me if it is not for commercial use?
It sucks that I have a typography class where the typeface is so imporanat, but I can't afford the 2 I want use....
It is very important for me to do well in this course and others and choice of typeface is CRUCIAL to the project.
How can I get help?

The short answer... yes, it is illegal. However, some font files allow sharing for non-commercial use, but you have to look at the terms set by the foundry from which the font originates.
But, the terms are rarely, if ever, enforced. The real question is can you deal with the ethical dilemma if you break the terms?

I suppose I could deal with the moral dilemma should I ever actually access the font. Seeing how it is non-commercial, then definitely.
Would a foundry donate?
HA!

in the classes I've taken, it's been pointed out that fair use incorporates student work. So for student work, I've used songs, images, fonts etc that I would never DREAM of using for commercial work without paying.

I suppose I could try emailing the foundry and see what happens. It's worth a shot anyway.

A foundry will never give away a font without some exchange of money. They really don't care what it is used for...
Fair use has limitations... I think, as a student, you still need to buy fonts... just like you must pay for software. Granted, they may give you a student discount.
How many students pay for fonts... I'm guessing few to none.

Novelty fonts are NOT typefaces. A typeface contains weights, italics, bolds, proper kerning.
I understand wanting a real face vs a novelty font.
I just have no money.
BTW- House Industries no reply.
Hoeefler-Jones- but at least the courtesy of a reply- twice.
True typefaces are quality. A font is a font.
