I love how you can highlight a word or character in photoshop and go up to the toolbar and use the cursor keys to flip through the different fonts and then you can see it being updated in real time, however in illustrator you can't do this? which i find so frustrating! or is there a way to do this?

I select / peruse fonts in Suitcase Fusion. You can get a look at them that way.

i preview my type in Linotype Fontexplorer X and then use it in illustrator. Ive noticed this long ago and only hope that illustrator cs3 has this small issue corrected.

Yeah. That's a big issue. Apparently (from what I've been told) Illustrator/Windows users have this functionality.
(someone with actual experience on the Win side can please confirm/correct me)

thorzdad i don't think so, we have windows at work here and i tried it, doesn't have that function either... it would be so much better if illustrator has that small feature. I find it so useful for designing logos without having to leave my workspace and use a 3rd party app to preview. I rather it preview right on my artboard in illustrator so I can see it along with my other graphical elements. Makes it so much easier to visualize. I pray to God that they fix this in CS3.

You could use "art directors tool kit", it comes free with your mac. It'll let you type a sentence and then if you highlight the font name, you can use the arrow keys to scroll through all your fonts. its pretty quick and doesn't eat up memory.

ive always used this method...ill get a few typefaces i like for the job and throw em in a folder and use them where appropriate, i don't think the feature would help me, personally because i have my own method, much but it is definitely loads better than how it is now.
if youre asking about fontexplorerx, i ABSOLUTELY love it.
