I am looking to upgrade my current set up to a MBP. I would love to learn Aperture and get a the 23" display. my Key concern is horsepower, my budget is 2,400 Right now. I have a Edu discount so that means i can get the MBP 128 and a 23" refurb or the 256 and get a cheaper display.

i Am just curious to know what some of the other photographers on here are using and how well it works.

1) if you have the (current) 128 how well it runs aperture with and without the 23".
2) Same question only with the 256 if you have it.

just would like to make sure I'm making the right move before i go through with it. Its a lot of money to play with.

I assume you're referring to a MBP with 128 megabytes of video memory?

A standard MacBook Pro should do fine with Aperture even while hooked up to a 23in Cinema Display.

Keep in mind though, Aperture isn't blazing fast on any hardware, even a quad Mac Pro with tons of memory.

Another point to consider it you're concerned about performance is how large the files you intend to process are; for example, 8 megapixel raw files are going to process much faster than 22 megapixel raw files.

i currently work with 6 to 22 MB files. my camera is the Rebel XT but i will be getting another camera soon. so that 23" doesn't slow down the MBP?
