Ok there are two questions I have with Photopshop CS3 and I'm hoping that there are fixes or work arounds for them because they are very annoying.
1: Is there a way to keep PS from adding copy to the end of everything that's duplicated?
2: Is there a way to close all effects when they are copied to a layer, without hitting the down arrow to the right?
With the effects, I tend to spice up one picture or something then I copy the layer style and paste it to hundreds of pictures at a time, then I have to go through and close each effect drop down box so that my layer list isn't expanded 200X more than it needs to be. It's really annoying and I have yet to find a fix or work around to this problem.

No one knows the answers to these questions? Can anyone even point me in the right direction?

From you question it appears as if you are trying to apply a similar effect to lots of different images (and the way photoshop shows the 'pasted' layer effect is troublesome.
If you were a little clearer in your big goal, it might help. What if you try and make your effects to a layer as a recorded action and the apply the action in the FILE->Automation->Batch... option to run them on all you're open documents.
1-I'm not sure you can change this 'feature' when duplicating layers (it is mildly annoying when you have lots of layers).
2-If you are trying to apply the effects onto many layers in the same file, try this:
Put all the desired layers into a new folder(group) in the layers pallet and the close the folder hierarchy. Select the folder (highlight it) and apply your effects to the folder/group and the effects are added to all of items at once. The effects are still 'expanded' but they don't have to get in your way when you apply them.
Or you can create your own effects style that can be applied to a layer. Look in the tutorials or help files for how to create your own custom styles.

bluedog,
Thanks for the tip on adding a layer style to a folder, didn't realize you could do this. That will probable save me a lot of time in the long run.
Now if I can figure out a way to remove the "copy" from duplicated items then I'll be all set.

I don't understand. If you duplicate or save as- the dialog box allows you to type a name...

I originally thought Mike.Bowden was asking about the 'save a copy...' also. His question is when you are in the layers palette and choose to duplicate a layer... it uses the name of the duplicate layer and adds 'copy' onto it. So if you duplicate a duplicate you get something like 'Layer 0 copy 2' and 'Layer 0 copy' and your original 'Layer 0'.
Since that's default coded behavior in the application I don't see it being modifiable.
