I'd like to draw some house floor plans. First make a digital version of the paper‑based one for my own house, then design a few others.
What software would you recommend?
I had a look at CADintosh a while back, but it seemed like overkill, and I couldn't really get the hang of it.
I suppose I could do it in GraphicConverter, Create, Intaglio, or something, but basically, I was hoping to find something that came with a proper grid and included symbols for walls, door swings, windows, scale, etc.
Somebody mentioned EazyDraw, but whilst it does have lots of symbol sets, it doesn't have an architectural one (maybe the newer versions do, but v.1.9 doesn't, which is the version I'm stuck with as a Panther user), and the included sample floor plan is something I could have just as easily done in GC.

Ever thought about using Google Sketchup?

Yeah Sketchup would be good for that.

I don't know about that...i've found SketchUp to be really difficult to use - it's not very detailed for exact dimensions and stuff..
If you have a copy of Windows installed on your Mac, give MS Visio Pro a shot - see if you can find it cheap online or something. It's not as precise as professional drafting applications, but it works for a home floor plan. It won't let you do 3D designs, but it's great for laying out your house plan for arranging furniture and whatnot. The free alternative would be Draw, which is part of OpenOffice.

I'd also be interested in a good floorplan app. I work for a school district and the secretaries are always looking for something to edit maps of the school in. Currently they're forced to used ColorIt and Superpaint.

It's been a while since I used SketchUp, but from what I remember it doesn't seem to be suited to doing precise 2D plans, more for 3D stuff.
I don't have Windows.
Downloaded CADintosh again, as well as demos for MacDraft, RealCADD and HighDesign. HighDesign looks like a clear winner at the moment, and whilst I'm not currently in the market for a $169 CAD application, taking screenshots of the plans should do fine for web and small scale print use.

I remember wanting to make a PC board layout program. Something simple, and just dual sided. Since there was really nothing like that for the Mac at the time (now there is.. ) I was gonna do it in Supercard.
Aah those were the days... I got close, but decided even the basics of programming wasn't for me.
I still tinker with etching my own circuit boards for projects I do now and then. But I wasn't into it like i used to.
