Hey guys,
funny how unwieldy illustrator can be...it's like a helicopter- tricky but very powerful once you get used to it. Then they change a keyboard shortcut on you and suddenly you're stuck using the mouse.
Anyway. I've got a shape that I'm trying to copy and nudge around using the keyboard.
In CS2, I could hold down command+option (or command+shift+option) and use the arrow keys to make a copy and move it without moving the original. Is there some new feature in CS3 that's hijacked the shortcut? This was really useful for creating repeating patterns, etc., but it's making me crazy not being able to do it anymore.
Anybody?

It should be just holding down Option while hitting the arrow key.

Agreed, should be. But for some reason the cursor turns into the direct selection tool instead, and nothing moves.
Snap to grid/point are turned off. No custom keyboard shortcuts...everything is stock settings.

Option gives you the arrow cursor? That's usually the Command (Apple) key.
Is this your first time running CS3? Or was everything running fine until now?
According to this page the keyboard shortcuts for copying should be the same as always.
It's possible something is corrupted. Caps Lock on?

Nope, veteran (so I thought) user. And for whatever reason, it now looks like the shortcut's working again. Probably just needed a reboot.
Thorzdad, thanks for the advice. You're probably right about the corruption thing. I was working with a pretty freakin' big file with lots of raster effects, lots of layers, etc. I've noticed that doing stuff like this, especially late at night, things can turn nuts, then are fine the next day. Probably just needed .

Yeah. Banging away on big files absolutely can make Illustrator act-up.
Hopefully, you're using a separate HD for your scratch disc. I've found that makes a world of difference in Illustrator behavior. That and saving early and often, of course.

More likely you had temporary brain fade and were holding the wrong modifier key down by mistake.
we've all done it (apart from me obviously)
