After apples announcement about iphoto I really started thinking about how cool geotagging could be. My main camera right now is a canon 40D and I'm looking for a way to tag my photos. Does anyone know of a way to add a geotagging ability to your canon DSLR?
Thanks a bunch! =)

AFAIK only the latest pro Canons (1D3, 5D2) support GPS (and it's an expensive proposition at ~$1000).

You could get GPS datalogger (just logs time and location) and then correlate that to the times in the EXIF of the photos. Sony makes one that comes with Windows software for doing the correlation.

Or switch to the dark side and get a D90 and the GP-1.
Mac update estimates: MacBook Pro 4Q09-Jan10 (quad core Nehalem [Clarksfield]); MacBook 3Q09 (Arrandale); MacBook Air 1Q10 (Arrandale LV); Mac Pro/Xserve 1Q10 (6 core Westmere, 64+GB RAM); iMac 3Q10 (quad core everywhere); Mac mini 2010

Evidently the new Eye-Fi SD cards being released soon will be able to geotag the images it takes. I'm not sure how it does it. Might be something to look into.

Here's a link:

With the 40D you would need to buy the wireless grip, you can then plug a usb gps dongle into that.... the grip it expensive tho!!

Canon 40D doesnt do SD so that eyefi isnt an option.

Hey all,

I just wanted to chime in on your discussion about geotagging your images...

Found Maperture Pro for Aperture from Übermind that is currently in BETA testing. It allows for visual geotagging & reverse geocoding of your images as well as automatic GPS tagging from a tracklog data file. The software seems to be definitely in the right direction and is really stable thus far. Far superior than anything I've tried for trying to stamp GPS information into my images.

It also allows you to upload already geotagged images to view on the map!

Huh, I thought I looked up the specs to see if it supported SD cards. My error, but this would work for any SD supported camera. Thanks for everyone's options, this is going to be a growing feature and become a useful way to help tag images.
