This has been driving me crazy for YEARS. It's not calculating the dimensions in the screen shot. It won't do dimensions for images that are on network volumes. But it already reads the file anyway to make the preview. What the hell. This would speed up my work flow SO MUCH if I didn't have to constantly open images in Preview and getinfo on them. Is there any way to make this feature work in the Finder, ALL THE TIME. Not just on local disks.

Try the Inspector. You get it under the File menu when you hold down the option key. The keyboard shortcut is cmd-opt-I. It'll give you dimensions of the selected picture under the More Info item.

Yes this is more commonly known as "Get Info". And it's the same deal, it only shows dimensions of images that are on a local disk. Network volumes... it just skips that piece of information. So annoying.

You can also display the dimensions in icon view by opening the View Options (cmd-J) and checking "Show Item Info...".

Sorry about the network volume problem. But Get Info is not the same as the Inspector. The Inspector shows information on the current selection. Get Info is specific to a single file.

Also doesn't work on network volumes.

They are the same thing, and show the same info, and both don't show dimensional info on network volumes. The only difference is "inspector" is for multiple files, get info is for one file at a time. But otherwise it's the same thing. And neither are working.

If you want to keep thinking that, knock yourself out. But you're wrong. They behave differently. The inspector stays on top and displays information about the current selection (single or multiple files) and updates when the selection changes. The Get Info dialog is specific to a single file and does not change with the selection.

Yes they are a different kind of window, but they're the same thing. And anyway this has nothing to do with the problem.

You don't seem to want to "get it". I'm done explaining. I'm sorry I can't help with your network volume issue. I don't have any network volumes to play with.

He is correct that those tips don't work for network volumes. I just tried it.

I usually drag an image to a browser or photoshop to get dimensions, or if it's online, I use web developer toolbar/firebug to get detailed information.

Maybe an image browsing app is the way to go the network volumes. I think Adobe's Bridge probably works, but that's expensive. There must be lower cost alternatives.

Anyone else have any tricks? What about those hidden options many Apple apps have? Some plist i can edit to make the finder give dimensions of networked images? I really don't want to use a separate app. I have plenty of apps that can give me dimensions, I'm trying to skip a step.
