I have a question. How did I make these objects light? Their opacity is 100%. Their colors are 100%. And yet, they are faded to about 10%. I did this on purpose. But now I"m trying to un-fade them and get them back to 100%. I'm going to "simulate" transparency by using lighter colors, to see if I can get a better result from the printer. But I can't figure out how I made these light, to make them un-light. What the hell???

I've had this issue with Illustrator before. Are the items grouped? There's a chance that, if they are grouped, there is one item that there is one item in that group that is overriding the settings on the rest of the objects.

Similarly, if there are any clipping masks still active, etc. etc. Use the direct-selection tool to go through and click on each individual object to see what the actual settings are on the objects. Be sure to watch the Appearance panel. Effects and settings get buried and forgotten in there.

Yup I used the direct select tool, and checked the appearance palette. And everything is totally normal. Nothing to explain why a black object is showing as grey. I used transparency on other items in this document, I can't imagine I'd use something else on these. Yet these objects are all clearly showing 100% opacity. Maybe I'll try opening it in a different version of illustrator.

I know I've had this problem before and just ended up deleting the objects and starting over. I never could nail-down what the problem was.
Did you try a copy/paste to a new document?

Hmmm copying and pasting to a new document pastes it in full vividness, no lightness. Very odd.

that supports the group theory, or perhaps you had layer opacity on?

Yeah. There's some obscure setting somewhere that's keeping it transparent.
Now, delete the original transparent group. Then copy/paste the full vivid one back to the original document. See if that fixes it. If it comes back in transparent, try moving it to a new layer and see if it changes.

Everything is ungrouped. Pasting to the same layer makes it transparent, pasting to a new layer makes it solid. But illustrator can't do full layer transparency like photoshop, can it? If so how? I don't see a setting for it?

Oh wow that's messed up. Each individual item has 100% transparency (meaning opacity), but when you select, and only when you select EVERY item in the ENTIRE layer, then does it show you 8% and let you adjust it. Wow what a horrible way to deal with opacity.

Ah. THAT'S what I remember! You've stumbled on it. Yeah, it's a really crazy way of handling transparency.
