Using 'ftp.euro.apple.com' as the web proxy for the QT 4.1 installer does NOT work Daniel!

Anybody else manage to get it working?

I got it working on the second try. All you have to do is launch the Installer, check the button Use Web Proxy and paste in the proxy Daniel gave. That's all I did and I got it working.

It didn't work for me. It could be because I am behind a firewall and use a proxy server get anywhere.

I just left the port blank.

ok, it doesn't work for me...

I have tried pasting ftp.euro.apple.com in to the proxy address and i click continue, then it just says the data on the server is too old to use with this installer.

I have tried about 10 times now, I have also tried taking out the default port number.

I've tried changing the installs options but still no luck.

I am not behind any sort of firewall, and do not use any proxy servers.

Any ideas?

The main page says to download the new installer on the ftp site.

You don't need the new installer, I just stuck in the proxy , lefy everything else blank and it works fine.

Someone in this thread suggested that you can download the roughly 8 MB vise data file for QT 4.1 full installation, and retain it. My question is, how does one tell the installer to use a local data file rather than the remote one? Is it enough to place them in the same folder? And there are two other small files in the QT 4.1 directory at ftp.euro.apple.com. What are they?

Second try for me. I think you need to use the new updater that comes across on the first try.

There should be a file called Quicktime Installer Cache, in the quicktime installer folder during the installation. It does get deleted when the installer quits, so do not quit the installer and drag it out of the installer folder. It will think that it hs been deleted and then you don't have to redownload the files.

And what do you do then? How do you tell Installer to grab the 8M file that I downloaded? Do I need to rename it? Change creator/type?

Can anyone clarify that business with the VISE installer stuff that's in that directory? I tried a couple of things but it doesn't look like the installer will use anything other than what it downloads from Apple by itself (and yes, I know about keeping the installer cache file - you still need an active connection to use that file)

Hmm. It worked for me. Did the full install, seemed to get everything.

Oh, even tho' I copied my cache file over before restarting, the installer didn't erase it....

I got the full install 2nd time around. First attempt gave me a DiskFull error message on a partition with 800Meg free!

So, I switched off Virtual memory, rebooted, and ran the installer again using ftp apple euro address and it worked.

Sadly, QuickTime 4.1 Movie player still looks rubbish and does not conform to Apple GUI rules.

Some very nice new touches to the features of the install.

Streaming from BBC World news gave fantastic results. Very smooth.

I'm running it on my iMac DV SE and it is great.
No DVD sync/skipping issues.
No more sound mysteriously turning off.

Sound Manager 3.6 is installed.

You need to run the installer twice and put the proxy info in both times.
If you can't get it to work, I wouldn't worry too much as Apple will surely post it "normally" very soon.

Okay. It finally worked. My problem was that I was behind a proxy server and DNS for my provider crashed over the weekend. The combination of two was causing the glitch.

the euro ftp appears to have been shut down... trying to get into the directory now (as of 3:30pm est) returns a permission denied message and dumps you into the root. My guess is that they will have the US installer this week (macworld) and don't want us accessing a localized version?

Hey, people; you're using a Macintosh! Didn't you ever hear of the term "Drag 'n' Drop"? Drag the cache file over the installer and voila! It installs the local data and won't even bother to get online. Works flawlessly! I mean; you MUST know this way to make things work on the Mac, don't you?! Shame if you don't; you call yourselves Mac-users?!...

I got QuickTime 4.1. It downloaded and work easy. Really cool update. I *LOVE* that AppleScript is now integrated into QuickTime. Its sooo useful.

Arghhh...I can't reach the Euro server at all...and I am on Cable internet so an 8 MB download should only take 2 minutes. Could somebody please post their update on a website where I can download it from, and e-mail me at abrody@smart.net when it is available?

it doesn't work: it still wants to connect to the internet.. what type/creator codes should the files have, who of you got it to work? and how did you go to work. i need info.

Most people in this forum are so vague, like:
'it worked fine for me', 'it didn't work for me'....

Gene:

After you take the Installer Cache file from 'the grips of doom' you simply put it in the folder with the installer to use it again, but you would have to remove it from the folder once again before installation is completed.

i got no InstallerCache file, i only have a VISEdata....

I couldn't copy the Installer Cache file before it disappeared. By the time it was complete downloading the file, it installed it (in a second or two) and deleted the file. I am having trouble playing movies from the QuickTime Player's Favorites "drawer" now, so I guess I'll have to wait for the release to re-install QT4.1.
