I have no idea how to describe the effects in this image, but I'd like to hear ideas about how to duplicate the processing.



He seems to be able to sharpen, do contrast, saturation on certain subjects in a photo but not on other parts of the photo.

Quite a bit of oversharpening in my opinion.

You can easily adjust the sharpening, contrast and saturation of parts of an image using layer masks.

Definitely oversaturation/brightening in selected ranges. Sharpening. Etc.
It's also quite probably that the image is made up of individual images. The running figure on the right, especially, looks like it may have been added later.

I get the feeling that my lack of PS skills is hampering my ability to produce photos that 'pop'. I've manipulated a few with Aperture that I'm very pleased with, but when you start needing layers to get a certain result, Aperture doesn't cut it.
