Does Quicktime 5 Pro on OS X record audio from a mic?
I thought Quicktime used to do this. Am I mistaken,
or just too dense to figure out how? Thanks for any help.

I don't think that QT does any kind of recording, either video or audio. You record with something else then paste it into QT and modify it there.
A very nice (free) audio recording application is Coaster. Find it on Version Tracker.
