Hi All,

I'm "shopping around" for PS at the moment. Never used PS at all. There seems to be a good 2nd hand market for PS 5.0 and 5.5.

Can any one tell me what the basic differences are between PS 5.0 and 5.5? PS 5.0 is selling cheaper than PS 5.5 in the used market.

Of course PS 6.0 is much more expensive. Would it be a big advantage to spend the extra on PS 6.0?

Any advice would be really appreciated.

If you plan to use photoshop very much then go for version 6. You are going to be up to date and cost less money when you want to upgrade.5 and 5.5 don't have many differences except some kind of magic wand tool called magic eraser or something like that.It has also some other changes that I can't remember this time. But not something that will make your work easier.5 5.5 and 6 have huge differences. If you plan to buy 5 or 5.5 and some other time upgrade to 6 simply don't do it.Go straight and buy 6.The differences are so big that it will boycott your workflow. For a start the shortcuts for the tools are different!!!So if you know the shortcuts from the other versions you'll be frustrated big time. The text tool works completely different. You don't type into a text box but straight to the image. You have better manipulation for your text. Also there is the introduction of the top bar which if you go from the older version to the newer you either will hate it or love it.Also there is a problem with effects made on 5 or 5.5 like drop shadow emboss and things like that that are read differently in 6.So if you have an image made on 5 and then opened in 6 you will have to correct the effects all over again. Nice addition is the way 6 treats text.If you want to resize it you can just free transform it and everything will stay anitialised and crisp.ALso if you transfer a psd file on another computer that doesn't have the fonts you are using it displays your fonts but you can't edit the text.On 5 you had to replace the fonts with some other even if you didn't want to edit it. Some good addition on 6 is the note tool. You can keep notes with your images.
And some other feauture that this time sleeps my mind.I suggest you go and buy 6 and forget 5 or 5.5.The 5 series has a different way of thinking than 6.So if you learn 5 very good you will feel kind of strange using then 6.The way of thinking for the future versions is 6 so you better keep up with this way.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask.I hope that I answered your questions.Yes my english are very bad

Although I'm still using PS 5 myself I may have an opportunity to upgrade soon enough. One major thing phobos left out is that Photoshop 5.5 was the first version to integrate "Image Ready" as an actual part of the Photoshop package. Image Ready used to be a stand-alone application for creating simple animations for the web or whatever. The Image Ready application was so similar to Photoshop in the way it worked that they eventually just made it "part" of Photoshop itself. So Version 5.5 and 6 (and I'd imagine future versions) will have this extra software.

Thanks Phobos & Mike for the advice.

I figure I will try and get 5.5 or stump-up more for 6.0. I would wait for 7.0 for OSX but it is a bit of an unknown beast and probably won't run so well on my G3 500Mhz.

By the way Phobos, your english isn't that bad. Better than mine and english is my first language.

Photoshop 7 will run no worse than 6 would on a G3 500. I'm running a beta of 7.0 right now in 9 and X and it's not slow at all on my G3 500. If it means a lot to you to use it in X I'd start stockpiling the cash and buy 7.

If not buy 6 and only 6... you'll love it, and in the long run it will save you a lot of time in future upgrades.

Thanks Mac Guru,

Is PS 7 going to be Coca or carbon? i.e will PS7 run on OS9.x (not through emulation) and OSX?

May be I should keep saving like you say.

Cheers

If photoshop was cocoa, Apple would own 95% of the market. Seriously, it's Carbon, along with updates to their other apps coming soon.
