I am using a registered version of QuarkXpress 4.1 passport edition. I am in a bit of a fix because my hard ware key has gone missing from the office. I spoke to a Quark distributer who said it was not possible to get spare keys due to piracy problems.
I have also e mailed Quark to get more info. No reply yet. Does anybody out there know if a third party hardware key is available?
Otherwise I will need to buy another copy just to get the key
Thanks

Yet another reason to go InDesign 2.0
Quark has ALWAYS been snooty and demanding of thier customers... I can't beleive the requirements to buy a copy these days!
It's like they're selling you a damned Leer Jet. Talk about some paranoid people.
If you look around Hotine there are plenty of system INIT's that emulate the hardware key. We have this on some of the Macs at school cause of the kids that think it's funny to snag the hardware keys.

When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns...
Isn't it sad that you have to use a hack to make your legitimate version of Quark to work? Keys are foolish if you ask me.

Agreed, especially in this day and age when connection types vary every few years. Anyone else have the hassle of upgrading a machine that had serial hardware keys when apple dropped serial support? :::shudder:::

This sounds promising. How can I get more information about this emulator?
I am using a macintosh sysyem by the way with a USB version hardkey. can I run this with a piece of software rather than hareware?
Really big thanks in advanced

This is why I cannot stress enough the importance of registerring software.
I also agree that Hardware keys are rediculous, weather this justifies jumping ship to InDesign is a bit iffy however. I'd think the best thing that Quark could do is get rid of the old "dongle/hardware key" and just create specialized serial numbers for multiple user licenses (I suppose this is what Adobe does???).
Actually at my last place of work I had little trouble getting tech support from Quark even on a version they'd purchased like years before I even had to make a call. They still had the companies name in thier database from when it was originally registerred years earlier. The support I needed didn't have to do with a hardware key/dongle however (they simply had separate software for each system).
So maybe you should try calling Quark again and get someone that can look-up your software registration info (assuming you *did* register). Sometimes you just have to be a little persistent with these matters.

the keys are just foolish. Just wait until Apple has a Firewire only computer, then we are all in the same boat again. I guess it stops fools from just grabbing the disk and walking away... It takes 1 hour more to search for a key and download it

I'll look for that software key... I know it's around here somewhere.
As for InDesign... yes it's THAT good. I've got it set for Quark keyboard layouts and I love it... PDF's are generated in a FRACTION of the time that Acrobat Distiller takes... (86pg book = 1 min. 34 sec.) I was stunned. Imports Pagemaker, and Quark docs 90% perfect... minor alterations needed for things like runaround, etc. but it's not HORRID like ID 1.0 was. NO MORE Clipping paths...NO MORE Clipping paths...NO MORE Clipping paths...NO MORE Clipping paths... I can't stop getting excited about that one... Simply save your file as a PSD or Enhanced TIFF with a transparent backgroud and you have a PERFECTLY isolated image. All in all I am VERY happy about this new app and my conversion total of Quark users is STILL climbing...
So far my total # of people I've moved to ID 2.0 is around 15-20.
