I'm in the midst of starting up a newsletter/magazine and was wondering where the best place would be to find freelance web designers, graphic artists/dtps, and photographers. I'm a big freelancer/hobbyist myself, but have recently become overwhelmed by the amount of work it takes to put together a magazine.

I was thinking of visiting local schools to see if any students would be interested in working and gaining experience. Colleges nearby include the Art Institute of Phila, UPenn, Drexel, Temple, and UDelaware. There are also lots of high schools around.

Do you think students would be interested? What kind of pay would be acceptable to offer a student (per hour) for freelance work? I'd probably only need help for a few hours on the weekend, some of which would be consulting work. Thanks!

Depends upon what you want to spend, and what direction your newsletter is going. If it's a local type pub/site, go to local colleges or place an add in the paper. If it's something national, post it anywhere you like.

What kind of DTP do you need... I freelance with print design ;-)

Why does this thread "almost" feel like spam? I mean you're actually asking where the "best place is to find freelancers"??? I'd think ANY designer here (myself included) would be open minded to a new project.

Sorry but it seems too much like your baiting people with a possible future sales plug or something.

Anyway yeah I'm open for freelance projects I'm a Graphic Designer/Desktop Publisher. I'm in the North Jersey area, and know a bit about Philly (I was stationned there in the Navy). My expertise lies mainly in page layout, typography and Illustration. Mostly for print, but I've assisted with some web projects (I just don't know HTML)

Anyway, if interrested, e-mail me (it's in my profile)

The first time I read his post I thought the same thing. When I read it again though it seems lke G-mac just wants to find the best place to recruit people in his area. I for one, being a college student, would love for someone to come to my school to offer me a job. G-mac I can almost guarantee that if you post about the job in the art building or even the comp sci building you wil get alot of interested students. It might seem kinda cheap, but I know that for 10 bucks an hour I would gladly do some freelance web design that I could use in my resume.

$10 / hour ?? What the **** kind of school are you attending?

You will NEVER make money at that rate. You shouldn't work for less than $25 / hour. I don't care if you're a freshman. You get paid for your taste, opinion and expertise -- even when it's being developed / shaped.

End of story.

$10 an hour isn't bad if you don't have ANY work to show... Spend 10 hours building a nice little website for that resume and make $100 bucks... or $10 an hour isn't bad if you suck...

$10/hr is a reasonable STUDENT rate. I wouldn't pay a student more than $15/hr to do *anything.* And when I was a student, that was good money... that wasn't THAT long ago. I believe it still is. When I was a student, I got work/study of $6.50/hr to do campus fliers... and I was glad to do it. Beat 4.50 an hour at d'angelos...

When experienced pros are having a hard time justifying $30-$40 an hour to clients ("gee, I can do it cheaper myself in Word!") why should students expect the same rate?

Hourly rate is a tough thing here...I have done some work for a small web design firm in my area, and saw invoices for approx. $125/hr. And the work there is NOT that visually attractive, save for one or two sites. After a one month internship, they began compensating me $10/hour, which is nothing to complain about for a 17yr old.

Clients I've had on my own have paid $25/hr, $20/hr, and $15/hr (this company wouldn't go any higher) but next time I do a site it's going to have to be for at least $30, $35. I also do work for a teacher of mine's web design outift for $15/hr to $20/hr depending on the site. Compared to the $100+ hourly rates, $20 to $25 is perfectly reasonable.

Thanks all, for your comments!

Sorry about the spam-like nature of the post (seemed like it when I read it over too), but I'm currently writing up a business plan and needed a rough idea of what freelancers would request on average. I'll be relying mostly on freelancers in the beginning to make sure I don't overdo my budget. I'm hoping the mag will be national in scope, but I'll be keeping it local for the short term.

Thanks again for your suggestions. Nothing quite like Mac users for great feedback and creative talent.
