Check out this site's portfolio: Awesome Web Services and tell me that they shouldn't be charging what they do for that crap.

You get what you pay for. Certainly, these aren't suitable for high-technology or advanced businesses, but for a mom and pop, the sites in the portfolio, while awful to my trained eye, are acceptable (and better than something the mom or pop could output from Netscape).

I could tell they were generated using FrontPage before viewing the source. Lovely work.

Thank you, my point exactly, and my competition close to here. The only they have up on me is a portfolio, otherwise I'd kick some ass in that area. Also, $1000 for a bronze package? Using Frontpage? Please.

Can you say copyrite infringement? This is just blatant theft!!

I wonder if the makers of Captain Morgans Spiced Rum know about this website.

It's funny because it's the first link I checked on that page. BINGO!!

Ech talkk about crappy web design. I've yet to venture into web design myself, but jeez that's just some stanky crapola.

I was doing business forms for almost 5 years. I mean some of the dullest looking stuff you've seen and yet even I can say I've seen business forms with more "flaire" then most of those web pages.

Those pages really give a whole new meaning to the word "awful".

Wow, people like that shouldn't post the pages... guys like me could walk in and clean house... most of them would take about 2 hours to beat, and I'm including the time to rent space on a server...

I didn't even see that Captain Morgan one. I'm sorry but if they are getting paid $35/hr for that crap, then us designers are def. worth at least $200/hr MINIMUM.

I know exactly what you mean. My previous job was in print, business forms , direct mailers etc., etc. Lots of detail oriented work involving typesetting, layout and so forth.

Now I do color matching for these banners (like you'd see at football games, museums, etc., etc.) This work is like 10 times easier than what I did before and I get paid the same. I don't even have to layout anything at all, it's all provided by ad agencies and so on.

This is my second job in the production art field, and it really puts things in perspective. I should have been getting paid like twice what I was at my previous job.

no, because of crappy people like them who charge $35/hr, good designers can't compete. Clients with small budgets and little taste will go to them. Grrr.

Or is it by raising our rates that we advertise our quality?

Actually, those businesses have a nice budget...out here on Lake Erie they make a killing 9 months out of the year.
