Everytime I try to select 'Print' or 'Page Setup" under the File menu in Quark 4.1I get the error message "cannot open the printer". The Quark manual gives three reasons why this might be happening:
1) There is not enough memory available to open the printer. 2) Too many files are open. 3) the printer is not connected.
Then it gives me the solutions to each problem:
1) Close apps and windows that are not in use. 2)close unused extensions in the Xtensions Manager. 3) select a printer in the chooser.
I have tried all of this and more. Nothing is working. Not even re-installing Quark. I really need to print this Quark document soon and I can't while I'm getting this error message.
If anyone knows how to fix this problem or how I can print a Quark document without using Quark so I can at least get this file printed I would really appreciate the help.
My printer is an Epson 1270 Photo if that will help to know
Thanks

I've been having a similar problem with a G4/400 and an Epson 3000 printer at work. The only thing I can attribute it to is that I upgraded it's OS from 9.0.4 to 9.2.1. I'll get an error -23 whenever I even try to use page setup. The printer shows-up in the chooser (it's an ethernet printer by-the-way), but it won't let me print diddly.

I've gone nuts trying to play with the millions of extensions in the extensions folder and I've tried re-installing the printer drivers with zero luck. Epsons website doesn't mention any issues running this printer under OS 9.2.1 so there must be some solution. Tried running Nortons and Disk warrior as-well with no solutions to the problem.

I'm about ready to wipe the drive clean and re-install everything from scratch again.

The problem your having is almost exactly the same. I just can't figure it out. The first time I tried printing It worked fine as far as being able to print, but I noticed my text was jagged. Somehow my ATM got turned of. I would go into the ATM control panel and enable the text smoothing option then resart and when my Desktop would come back up my ATM would be in the Trash. The computer was placing it there for some reason. Finally I had to go to the Adobe site and download the newest version of ATM. The new version worked and smoothed my type, but then I tried to print and got that error. Aggggghhhhh!!! Computers never fail to frustrate the ever living crap out of me when it comes to printing something or printing something the way I want it to print. Hopefully I can figure this shiznit out soon before I go iinsane trying.

are all of you using the Adobe PS driver or Laserwriter 8? the Adobe PS driver is unreliable, but is required for some printers...you might also just want to try to re-setup your printers in the chooser.

Possible temporary work-around: try creating a PostScript file using AdobePDF writer and then distilling and printing from Acrobat. OR save page as eps and distill, then print in Acrobat. When Quark bombs on print, it's a font-related issue 99% of the time.

Remember to change your monitor settings to 256 colors if using an inkjet printer in Acrobat.

This sounds like some kind of font, open-file or system heap limitation. Prior to System 8, you could use a utility like Bootman to allow more open files at the expense of course of using more memory. I just checked the web and can't find it listed anywhere. In any event, since System 9, this is supposed to be an automatic process and the limit on open files has been drastically increased, though Quark might still be working internally with older limits since it's still basically System 7.6 technology with a few patches added on.

Try rebooting with ATM off and just the basic system fonts open. Go ahead and print, even if you get the "font missing" message. If the job prints OK, but in Courier, then you know we are dealing with a font or open-files limit problem in the system. Re-install your fonts and re-try.

If you still bomb, do a fresh system install.

If you have problems beyond this stage, then it's either a Quark or bad image file problem. Try printing "rough": if OK, it's most likely an image; if not, there's a big problem with Quark.

Thanks for the info everyone. Hopefully I can use soem of it to help fix my problem. I ended up making the Quark document a PDF file and printing it like that. It turned out okay, not as good as it would have directly from Quark, but it did the job. Now I just need to try and fix Quark... after I get over this nasty flu bug.
