I'd like to second a vote for the "Real World" series of books. In my opinion, they have the greatest density of solid and useful information for professionals. The book is well organized for use as a reference, but is written in a style that is easy to read through without becoming bored.
Although that comes with a bias and insatiable interest in computer graphics. I found the Real World series to be 100% prime meat, no gristle (boring and useless information) and no fat (special effects goop)
