Hello, our school got photoshop 6 with the purchase of our scanner. My friend then helped me make some cool glossy buttons for our web page. He also made a .psd button that I could change the text in, but the buttons backgrounds are not transparent. My friend is on vacation in Europe for 2 weeks and I need to make some buttons fast, can anyone tell me how to do this in PS 6??

Well, I think you just change the text, you don't need to change the background in the .psd file. To make the background a layer, just double click on it, and it will ask you to enter a name...

Are the buttons on a separate layer from the background? Not sure why you'd want a transparent button because it won't show up. If you want to change the background, either change the background color, or disable the background layer's visibility.
If you want the actual button layer transparent, then the actual button will not show up correctly. If you want the button to look like it's transparent, more like an effect, then you need to select only a portion of the inside shape of the button and with a low setting, use the erasure tool to lightly erase the pixels on the inside of the button. That should give you the effect.

Actually, they are on seperate layers. Here is what I am looking to do. The buttons have a white rectangular background that shows up when I try to put it in a web page. I want to make that white area transparent so only the button shows on the screen and not the white part. Again, my fault for not explaining better. But again, thanks!

I believe that you achieve this in the saving process. I seem to recall a setting in the save options for a GIF(?), where you can set a certain color as transparent.
I could be way off though. I'd confirm, but I only have PS 5 here at work.
...OK, PS 5 has an option under the File->Export->GIF89a Export... With this, you can select a Transparency Index Color. I seem to remember it being much better integrated into PS 6. Should be in the Save options under GIF (maybe even other formats).
Good luck!
