Nikon has been an excellent choice for me. A friend borrowed my 880 and compared it with a sony and fuji and another? and he found it to be far superior in true color( to his eye anyways).
The 775 seems to be a very good value at the moment.

You gotta tame the beast before you let it out of its cage.

i know you said "other than canons" but i just wanted to put in a plug for my digital elph s110. i bought it a year ago and have used it for personal snaps and for comping purposes. for both tasks it's proven to be a great buy. also, my wife is a photo stylist and she uses it when she sources props. the compact size makes it ideal for her to carry around.
it's simply a point-and-shoot camera but the quality isn't bad. as i said, i use it to shoot comps images -- outline shots, package comps for presentations, etc. i also just took it on vacation and it was the best camera i've ever carried on a trip.
regardless of what camera you buy a mindstor digital wallet is a great storage drive for locations or traveling. you can get their discontinued version for a great price or you can go with the new and improved models. i got a 20gb drive and i love it.
good luck.

graphic artist? i reccomend a 3 mega pixels or above...
having said that, i would go with nikon 775 if you are a beginner (small and easy) but a little pricey
i hear kodak is quality and easy to use
and i would choose compact flash over smartmedia because compactflash seems to be gaining momentum over SM and in the future...this may be a problem

Heh, I *still* SWEAR by my old skool Olympus D600L. Its only like 1.4 mega pixels but dammit it cost me close to a grand like 3 years ago and its a workhorse of love. Used it for countless comps and alot of web work. It works like a charm. i'd recommend any olympus after my great experience with this one.
