Hey everyone,
So I made the transition to Quark 5. I like it. There are a few new things to like. I don't use the web stuff. But for regular use...I was wondering is anyone else having the freezing delay problem? Every ten minutes for four secs and then again 4 sec's later. Repeat every ten min.
There is a documented forum on the quark forum about this and quark acknowledges it. I'm just wondering are other people experienceing this or is there just so few people using 5 to really comment about it?
Oh and the culprit seems to be AppleTalk. Turn it off and no more problems. But you know how feasble that is!
<sigh>

Well my new job doesn't rely on page layout applications as much (we're more photoshop/illustrator oriented), but my last job of nearly 5 years was nothing but Quark work, so I honed my skills there.
I'm still using Quark 4.11 at home. I gotta say that an appletalk issue with Quark 5 would be a pretty big deal in the business world. I could just see my old co-workers pulling thier hair out over it if they've upgraded to 5 already.
That's definitely something that would require fixxing and fast.
Besides the web stuff, and the layers is it alot different/better than version 4?

Eric -- You, me and the six other people foolish enough to have purchased Quark 5 are having the same problem. I've spoken with Quark and searched numerous boards trying to find a solution / work around (disabling Apple Talk is not realistic). The bottom line is that the app stinks in more ways than one. In fact, I was at the Apple Store Mall of America one hour ago and a guy at the Genius Bar suggested switching to InDesign. He claims to use it and swears it makes Quark look bad -- not that they haven't already done that themselves...

I don't know about BETTER, but it seems a bit more
"cleaned up". There is still room for much improvement. One of the things I liked is that the preview for the "fancy" box boarders actually previews now! Now you can actually see the certificated and all the others on the screen.
I dunno, I've always been an advocate for early adoption of new stuff. Besides, I find that even having problems with the software gives me the opportunity to stretch my "workaround" muscle and play dectective to figure stuff out. This said, I have to admit that I have NOT made the transition to OS X. I'm going to wait for Quark to move over there and for the font issue to be worked out. I don't want to have to switch between different OS's inorder to make stuff work.

Eric -- I don't know what font issue you're referring to but OS X is great. I'm waiting for Quark to wake up and for my Photoshop upgrade to arrive and I'll be ready to ditch OS 9.
As for Quark...they've taken far too long to "upgrade" to 5 and it was not worth the wait. I suspect Adobe's InDesign will quickly eat up Quark. This comes from a long time Quark enthusiast who's tired of their indolence.

I love it when people say "I'm 100% OSX, and have cleaned off all of my OS 9 junk"... Who are these people?
Seriously, I'm fighting OS X in only this area. Using Quark 4.1 via Classic is just strange...
I haven't bumped up to 5.0, what's this AppleTalk issue?

Two four sec pauses/freezes (the entire system!) four secs apart, every ten minutes. Turn off apple talk and it goes away.
The quark forum, Quark 5.0 for mac, under the topic:
Lagging, pauses, freezes in 5.0 tells the tale...

I'm using 5.0, but I haven't noticed this delay (yes, my AppleTalk is on). Hmm...
The only problem I had was with a FontReserve auto-activation xtension, which has now been sorted out with the next beta release.
