don't know of an application like that.

wouldn't it be easier to just buy the bitmapped font?

I have drawn a bitmap font, I would like to transform it into vector-based outline font so I could use it as a pixel font in Flash. That's the thing.

Macromedia Fontographer

Great little app. Very old, and hasn't been upgraded in years, but it's very solid. Great investment if you are going to be dealing with this sort of thing in the future. One-click conversion to PostScript format from Bitmap (and reverse, if I remember correctly). Also converts Windows format fonts to Mac format.

[Edit: No X native version, and none planned.]

Fontographer will work but be aware that its creation of TrueType fonts is pretty bad: its hinting system is crude at best. That said, it does a good job with Type 1s.

You can trace your bitmaps in Fontopgrapher or in a second application like Freehand.

<whine>Unfortunately, the state of font tools on the Mac is in very sad shape. How about a tool that can create OpenType or dFonts? Reliably convert formats (TransType is a buggy POS at best)? Font menu?</whine>

As a side note...the Chinese language pack on your install CD comes with a very basic TrueType font editor. I don't know if it can convert bitmaps or Freehand/Illustrator/EPS files but you might want to take a look since it's free.

Been using Fontographer for quite a while now, but the problem is that it DOES NOT open a font that has only bitmaps and therefore can not convert it outlined font.

That's what I am trying to find a workaround for.
There are pretty neat font tools at
Font Lab like BitFonter, but they only let you draw bitmapped fonts and won't make any outlines.

*** i am not an expert on this ****

so don't make fun of me if i'm completely totally wrong...

but maybe try bringing the font into flash, breaking it apart and turning it into a symbol and then exporting it into a macromedia app like freehand?

but does breaking it and symbolizing it turn it into vector math? i dunno, so completely ignore this post if i'm wrong

Well... It's all very nice, but THIS was what I needed. Sort of.

There's no tool to convert any bitmap to outlined font. At least I haven't found any after an extensive search. And the only solution was to re-draw the font (from bitmap version) in Fontographer.

Did it. Anybody wants to beta test?

Yes, I did. It does help - thanks for the link! But the method Atomic people showed actually proved to be quite handy and qucik (there's a link in my earlier post somewhere above ) and Streamline works app. 90% of the time - you still have to go a make plenty of adjustments to it's work. Besides, pixel fonts do need a very exact grid and guide system and it's kind of easier to set it up in Fontographer and make the whole font from the scratch rather than trace it. But thanks for the help and the link!
