It was a program that used a CD that was packaged in Illustrator, Pagemaker, Photoshop, Acrobat, etc. that basically held the whole Adobe type catalog in a compressed encrypted form. You would go online and order a font and then Adobe would provide you with the unlock code for that font on the CD. But, with the internet working the way it does now, you can just as easily purchase and download the font in one simple transaction without the need for a CD. It's just a little progress.
