What is the best (and easiest) application to manipulate text? Is there a Photoshop plug-in that is simple and easy to use or another standalone application?

what kind of manipulation do you want to do?
photoshop can manipulate text to a fair degree (at least version 6), although Illustrator has more features in this area.

Have you tried the Vertigo 3D HotText plugin?
I've had it for a while and never used it, but have heard good things.
I'm installing it as we speak and I'll tell you about it after I try it out...

Update:

Installed fine.
Crashed upon registration. Heh.
Relaunching PhotoShop now...

EDIT:
Son of a... it crashes whenever I launch the plugin. Drops me into Macsbug.
I think it might be incompatible with Photoshop 6. I'll install 5.5 and see how it goes. I see the splash screen for a split second, then I get dumped...

Thanks for the heads up Cipher. What did you use to make your signature? Can't Photoshop do 3D text manipulation out of the box? Last time I used Photoshop, that's what I used it for. It was months ago though, and for the life of me I can't remember how. I think it was a standard filter or menu selection. Sorry if I sound so lame, but I just can't remember how I did it.

dark, I'd imagine Cipher(pardon me here Cipher) used a bit of a motion blur on either end of his name in the cig... i.e. selecting the first half of his name, then doing a motion blur to the left, then selecting the other half of his name(right side) and doing a motion blur in that direction.. he may have done it another way, but this would work.

actually (i just looked at it again), it looks like he may have had multiple layers, and put together a blurred left, a blurred right, and a not so blurred center..either way, motion blur Cipher? this is your cue..

good day to ya it's 5 AM.. i need sleep

PhotoShop can't do 3D text manipulation... the furthest PS goes in 3D is the "3D Transform" in the Render menu (Filter:Render)... out of the box, that is.

Actually, my signature was made using a Radial blur in zoom mode

Thanks guys. Damn, I know that I did some kind of 3D text thing in Photoshop. I guess the person who owns that particular computer deleted the plug-in. Hmm.... So are there any good plugins that handle it?

Cipher, I was intoxicated at the time of my post..5 am -(check out my pismo sighting in the Lounge)... radial blur.. of course!

Darkelf, Vertigo HotText I used to use under PS 5.5, and it's supercool.. you can really get some neat things going with that program, but I can't seem to find the plug anymore, I guess I deleted it or somethin..I can't use it under PS 6 anyhow..

goodluck.. oh, and try to find it on their webpage, they have a trial version that you can see what you can do, w/ limited features

dark3lf,

I find that 3D stuff is usually best left to real 3D apps and later imported.. but in a pinch, my favorite is KPT Vector Effect's 3D transform plugin for Illustrator/Freehand. It can do some very interesting effects in that they're often more illustrative than the usual 3D stuff.

Good luck,

Ok, I just installed PS 5.5 to try HotText - and it still crashes. Dammit.

Must be a newer Adobe extension/cdev or something... *sigh*
