NASA has a new mission, first man on saturn. But they need a real good patch/logo to get all the funding. Can we do it?

Fantastic, a real patch. I can even see the threads. I love to add it to my collection.
I've been too busy still, but will make something hopefully today.

Here's mine, not half as good as itomato's. But I have to show something, since I started the thread.

That's nice l'ignorante, much classier than mine. I should have spent a little more time on the actual design, but you obviously got the idea. Accurately representing the embroidery is a little tricky.

<edit> I did it with bump-mapping. For the border stitching, I used a radial gradient with many repeats. </edit>

I was wondering how you did it.You managed to get the threads' direction radial, I don't see how to do that with a texture fill. My guess is you embroidered the patch and scanned it .

(Off-topic question, does anybody know a keyboard short cut for Image Size)

Isn't Saturn just another Gas Giant like Jupiter? If so what would we land on?

i have no idea what color saturn is. and i didn't feel like looking it up. so saturn is whatever color it is in this graphic.

honeydew: hehe, i'm sure we'll see that saturn alien sign popping up at restaurant restrooms soon enough

itomato: nice look (and amusing too). how exactly did you do the textured edges on the badge? i tried a few things on mine, and i just ended up making it look worse.

l'ignorante: planets with eyebrows i like the rings. and i could actually see something similar on the arm of an astronaut.

It's not a contest, but if I had to make a choice I'd tell my mother to put Demonhoods' and itomatos' patches on either arm of my bomber-jacket ( were they ever popular in the US, the green ones with orange on the inside?)
As for copyright, you can use my contribution any way you like, I'd be flattered.

Cool! I'm glad my entry was appreciated!

For the border stitching around the edge I did multiple conical gradient fills, overlapping the parts that needed it. Then I bump-mapped.

For the other elements, I used my experience with embroidery of this type to guide me I made a soft, slender brush and did two layers for each; one with the color, and one in a contrasting color to use for a bump-map. The only parts that look as I intended are the border and the ring.
