I currently use a combination of the color range and some good old fasion airbrush in mask mode to get good qualitys mask but I got this from a friend and started to wonder:

We could both use something like MaskPro to knockout backgrounds around
images in Photoshop. MaskPro is what I have on my machine but are there
better programs? Corel KnockOut 1.5?

what do you guys think?

I've been making good use of Photoshop 5.5+'s Extract feature. You'll find it under the Image menu and although it has a very "unfinished" feel to it (any Adobe forum lurkers care to comment?) it does a fair job of finding edges, close cropping hair and such. The best part is, if you have Photoshop 5.5 or better, you already have Extract!

Extract in Photoshop is wonderful. I have found that Ultimatte Knockout is more prowerful, but it's a separate app. You have to save as a photoshop file and other stuff. Extract is great because it does a good job and it's right there when you need it. No special prepping or work.

My vote goes to Corel Knockout 1.5. The masking IMHO is second to none.
