This has always given me a problem and the Photoshop Manual is no help at all. Unfortunately I never have enough time at work to keep re-reading the manual to see if I missed something. Anyhow, I kinda sorta know how to make a Spot Channel in Photoshop 5.0. BUT, When I apply my spot color everything becomes grayscale. When I bring in the image into Quark, the Spot color does come into the color palett, yet it isn't in color. Also, I can't seem to be able to make more than one Spot Channel or assign a spot color to existing customer files. Can anyone help? THANKS!

This should solve your problem. Make sure that the Spot Channel is a spot channel and just an Alpha Channel. I know, but you would be surprised what I've seen. Double click on the channel, in the dialog is a color swatch. double-click the swatch and select the color you want it to to be (pms or whatever). Save the file as a Photoshop EPS DCS 2.0 file and everything should work just great.

I believe the problem that you describe may stem from how you saved the file rather than how you built it. Have you tried printing separations of the job? You may find that your spot color is there after all and that only the preview is grayscale.
Try resaving the DCS2.0 file and specifying "Single File with Color Composite" in the DCS2.0 Format dialog box that pops up.

Another thing that I've noticed with Photoshop DCS2.0 files is that if you make a change and save my hitting Command-S, your image will not print. But if you Save As... by hitting Command-Shift-S and replace your original, all will be fine when you update the image in your page layout app. Weird.
