make sure you only have one layer.
make sure you have no additional channels.
make sure you're in RGB Mode.
make sure you have no paths.

make sure you save your original image as a photoshop (.psd) to retain all your layers then choose flatten image from I think the file menu, then you should be good to go. What this does is makes your image one layer so it can save as a jpeg, or gif or whatever you want.

Since you saved it from Adobe Photoshop, it will have Photoshop's creator code. That's why Photoshop opens it when you double-click on it. It's still a JPEG file, so any other compatible program will be able to open it, too.

Long time no see man! Jump on AIM sometime if you can
When saving as a JPEG I use "Save As", and for GIF, "Save for Web".
To open it with another app, change the creator of the file with ResEdit - to open it with PictureViewer, change the creator to "OGLE".
Or you can just drag it to PictureViewer

Pictureviewer opens anything I make in Photoshop. Since Pictureviewer uses alot less RAM to run than Photoshop, it's great to use when all you want to do is look at, not edit your images.
I, too often have problems with Save As, although I never use layers. (Haven't figured them out yet). Save a Copy works fine whenver this happens...

I always used 'save a copy' up to version5.*, but I find it much more intuitive with the way it is consolidated into 'save as' in version 6.
The thing to know is that as soon as you do anything to your one layer file that causes photoshop to convert it to a transparent layer (known as promoting the background layer) or to add a layer, such as a text or adjustment layer it will have to be flattened or saved in a format that can recognise photoshop layers (photoshop psd or pdf).
This includes anything from double clicking the layer (this is how you promote it) to cropping or resizing the canvas size with big data (where the cropped portion is retained for later use) as well as any effects, adjustment layers, saved selections or channels.
Some of the options mentioned are only available after you have promoted the background layer or added layers.
