TIFF is usually a pretty good all around format. What's the prob with your prints-- are they pixillated, or is the color all screwed up, or both?
What resolution are your tiffs? I'd think you'd want them at least 300 dpi ( at 100% of print size). I usually save my scans at 600 dpi or better, in case I want to enlarge later.
What type of printer are you using, and have you tried printing your TIFFs directly from photoshop?
If you've got an Epson printer like me, its software disk should have installed some printing profiles into Photoshop which you can apply to your image to make sure they display accurately on your monitor.
Go to Image> Mode> Convert to profile... Look for your printer on the pop-up menu. (hopefully, this works in PS LE)
It's possible that AppleWorks and TIFFs just don't play well together, but there's really no reason why you shouldn't be able to print directly from Photoshop.
If I want to lay out different pictures on the same page, I'll place them in Illustrator, which seem to handle printing TIFF composites just fine.
