A friend and I both have B&W G3s, upgraded with Pro Keyboards and Mice, we've both experienced the computer going into sleep mode when "cmd-opt-0" is pressed (which doesn't seem to be documented anywhere), and then not being able to wake properly - the screen may come back on, but the machine will take no user input - so is effectively frozen and needs a reset.

One of the real headaches of this is that the short cut is also a short cut in Illustrator.

Is this a "feature" of the Pro Keyboard, something else, and is there a cure? Can the short cut be turned off?

Command-Shift-0 has been a "feature" of the MacOS for at least as far back MacOS 8.6. For Powerbook/mobile users its a great feature. The fact that a key combination is not documented means little. Consider some of other "features" which are hardly known:

"Command-Control-Shift-0":
Spin down hard drive

"Command-Control-Power/Eject"
Restart the computer

"Command-Control-Option-Power/Eject"
Shut down the computer

The reason you're computer is freezing is likely due to
 • Corrupted Energy Saver preferences
 • Active network/internet connections at the time of sleep (being that sleep in newer machines deactivates the ethernet/modem, shutting them down prematurely can cause system crashes)

If there is a resolution to your problem my guess would be one of two options:

Deactivate the Energy Saver Control Panel
Change/deactivate your conflicting shortcut in Photoshop
I hate to be stroppy when someone's *trying* to help, but do me a favour and read my post before you start.

I have a problem with Illustrator, not Photoshop. Actually this same keyboard short cut is used by Photoshop, and I think Acrobat and Xpress too... so what am I going to do, hack them up with Res Edit!?

This problem is also not a corrupted preferences problem, and deactivating Energy Saver doesn't work, because it just picks up the preferences that are already there and the sleep function seems to be attached to something else anyway (because cmd-shift-0 still works when extensions are disabled).

So, if someone has some experience of this problem, and perhaps knows of a cure, please contribute... but I've been through all the simple stuff already.

I hate to be stroppy myself, but I'm transferring this thread into the appropriate forum, Art & Graphic Design.

Can we put this thread back where it belongs? It's a hardware problem, not and Art and Graphic Design problem.

i'm not going to be stroppy at all. moving back to Powermac (i presume). only deals with anything graphic related tangentially.

and yes, resedit would be the only way you'd be able to change the shortcut in illustrator (not a pretty option).
