I am new to graphic design but already seem to be encountering problems with the limited number of fonts I have on my system.

My first question is whether PC fonts can be used on my Mac. A friend of mine is an Illustrator and has a fairly large collection that I could use if it were possible.

If this is not an option, I would like some advice on possibly purchasing a suite of fonts. I know Adobe sells them, but do not know of any other place where I can get (what seem to be) a nice collection at an affordable price. Actually, I am not sure that Adobe's fonts fall into the realm of affordable for me.

So basically I'm looking for a good collection of affordable fonts.
(And yes i have looked at some of the free font sites out there)

Thanx

Yes but with some difficulty. You need to convert them first.

Actually, if you buy Fontographer it might be worth your while.. I've tried some freeware/shareware PC to Mac font converters and they usually just garble the font.. maybe I had some bad experiences though. Fontographer on the other hand does a great job, but it's pretty darn tedious.. No batch converting or anything that nice. Can't suggest any big font houses to buy complete collections from as I don't use them (my school's nice enough to load their Macs with hundreds upon hundreds of gorgeous fonts.. )

There are some very nice fonts out there on the web though..free fonts.. I forget where though. Ah here's one, I love these guys:

One way to build a decent font library base is to look on the intallation CDs of various software. Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop includes a good number of fonts. Also I got a large number Bitstream fonts off the Corel WordPerfect Office CD. These may not be the best or the most fashionable, but there are plenty of good text fonts, some nice headline fonts, as well as a few interesting decorative fonts.
