800x600 on my iMac. Gets a bit crowded sometimes, but it works for me.

1280x1024 on a 19"
although a few of my friends think that's too small. so they'd die if they looked at cipher's rez.
soon i'll get a second video card so i can span it between my two 19" monitors. that'll help with video work a lot.

LOL, yeah, its pretty bad to start with - the refresh rate is 60Hz, and pulses like anything.
I can see the resresh at 75Hz, just, so 60's not too good.
But, use it for 5 minutes, and then, its just like normal. You don't notice it at all anymore, and its all good
I want a bigger monitor, but theres no point - it'd only run at the same res as this one, so... it'd be a waste of cash without getting a really high end one, like 2048*1536 on a 21" or something... though that'd be absolutely tiny...

I used 1152X870 until a few months back, now i`m using 1280X1024. It made a world of difference in terms of desktopspace to me. I also tried going down to 1600X1200, but found the text to be too blurry. Got a 21" ASD.

On my iMac (DV 400), I can choose 1024x768, 75Hz refresh or 640x480, 117Hz refresh beside the 800x600, 95Hz that I use.

According to Low End Mac even the Original iMac, revision A has:
“Video: supports resolutions of 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768 using ATI Rage IIc chip set, 2 MB provides 16-bits at maximum resolution, 24-bits at other settings
will support resolutions to 1600x1200 on an external monitor”
And the Revision B doesn’t mention anything about 16-bit at highest resolution.

Hold the control key and click the resolution changer control strip module.
Or in the Monitors control panel, make sure the option to show all resolutions is chosen in the popup menu.

Cypher, that trick to show extra resolutions does not work on the iMac, if he can't see the 1024x768 option he might be on a Rev A or B iMac and might need to go from "millions" of colors to "thousands"

tried that, doesn't work. In the Monitors controlpanel there is no show all option, only recommended. I also only get 1000 colours.
Something must be wrong, no? I mean this is a summer 2000 iMac350.

People have been known to lose IE prefs from changing their desktop picture. It is quite likely to be unrelated to your Monitor Control panel replacement.

I run my dual 500, 22 inch flat at 1600 X 1024, sometimes I lose perspective in building web pages, (Buttons are twice as big as they need to be, etc.) I need a second smaller monitor to check things on. Anyone else run into problems with bigger monitors?

Yeah, very often I make things WAY too big - namely nav frames and nav images/buttons etc, due to the high resolution.
I normally fix this by working in an 800*600 Photoshop document with a much larger one open at the same time - the 800*600 one is for laying stuff out and perspective.
Thats for graphics... when it comes to video, you can never have too much space. Even at 1600*1200 FCP feels a little cramped. Not much, at all, but just a little bit, when you have a lot of tracks and whatnot.

Its quite the issue for web design, when most web designers/programmers have monitors that are larger than the average in resolution. I've seen a desktop set up to show the actual pixel sizes of the differing screen resolutions.
Here's an example. Then you can size your browser windows to fit the background guides and see how things look. Its not quite like having a second monitor with the prescribed resolution, but it works great to see the general wrapping of text and size relationships.
Hope this helps. You can use this image, or just recreate what you want. To get the actual sizes, I used the OPTIONs palette in Photoshop and constrained the selection marquee tool to 640x480 pixels and then for the other sizes and did a "FILL" with color on seperate layers. If you want the full-sized image, click on this link and save the image to your local computer.
One note: The size INCLUDES the menubar, if you want to have the actual pixel sizes you could center the sizes on the screen and have the screens centered one within another.

Hey, very cool idea!
Prob is, my desktop is plain black, and I like that
Hmm.
The easiest way to make the diff sized segments in Photoshop would be to open a new doc at the desired resolution, apple-a, and drag the marquee to the other document...

If you want your desktop to be black, just use a really dark gray line for each resolution and it will be fairly unobtrusive. I've seen this done and you could apply it to any background using some form of transparency or layering effect in Photoshop/GIMP/other graphic application.

I'm currently running two 17" monitors 1 at 1152 X 870 and the other at 1024 X 768 (Both at thier Max). It's the minimum res I can really work with and the minimum size monitor(s) I can work with.
At work however it's 1600 X 1200 on most of the 21" displays on our workstations
Kinda depressing to come home sometimes But the dual monitor set-up almost makes-up for it

Hm, I suppose I could do that... but it would annoy the hell outta me
I just like it plain and black... and now, with a cool pic I made in the middle
(gotta indulge myself every now and then with some colour and vitality on my screen... )

I am running 1280x1024 on a 17"
I have a problem though. I recently restored my system software. So the monitor was set back to factory settings. After I changed the resolution, the Control Strip did not move. click here to see what I mean
I have tried turning the Control Strip on and off and everything. I can deal with it there, but it's more convienent to have it on the bottom.

Hold down Option and place your cursor over the Control Strip tab. Now you should be able to move the strip up and down as well as over to the right side of the screen.
